Sure shot?
A week has passed since the passing of MCA…
I’m actually gutted. I’m not riding some hearse band wagon here, I’m thoroughly saddened that he’s died and that the Beastie Boys may be no more. I may have still been in School when Intergalactic hit the top spot in the U.K charts but it was a turning point in my life. At the time my taste in music was entirely saturated by gangsta type rap music and awful R&B music that back in the day I thought was the shit as it seemed relative to my basketball “lifestyle” (Yeah, I was some sort of stoopid wigger)… Now I realise that the majority of it was actual shit. I’d known of the Beastie Boys, I’d just not paid much attention to their music. But since then my taste in music began to evolve from something less addicted to the catchy beats and hooks to something deeper. It seemed like it took to that point for my brain to begin evolving and digesting what it had taken in and to grow wiser. You could say they were the catalyst for my devotion to pursuing a more philosophical rap music - or understanding of Hip Hop.
I’m gonna miss him. His rough toned lyrics and positive themes stood out in their songs… And to be honest MCA was actually my preferred emcee from the Beastie’s, Mike D and Ad-Rock’s screeching vocals used to wear a little thin on me if I’m being honest! Never the less, they were - correction- ARE a great Hip Hop group and this small dedication to Adam (Yak!) is my only my way of expressing my mourning.
Dude I’m gonna miss you and your rhymes, “Gunnin for that number 1 spot” was the shit!
